A Ukrainian Air Force pilot was forced to eject from a MiG-29 after an air to air missile malfunction caused the aircraft to catch fire in midair.
While flying a counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) sortie over Odesa Oblast in southwest Ukraine an unspecified malfunction occurred while launching an air to air missile that caused the fighter aircraft to catch alight. The pilot wrestled to regain control of the aircraft but was unsuccessful, eventually electing to eject and abandon the aircraft. He was safely recovered and taken to a medical facility for evaluation.
Though the exact nature of the incident is unclear, it should be noted that missile launch malfunctions that could cause such a scenario are uncommon but far from impossible, with the solid rocket motors fitted to air to air missiles burning at thousands of degrees celsius. The regularity with which Ukraine is needing to employ live air to air munitions combined with the likely use of old missile stocks out of necessity mean these incidents almost certainly have a higher chance of occurring than usual.

Video footage was captured from the ground showing the MiG-29 in flames, while authorities would later release images of the aircraft’s crash site itself. The MiG-29, unsurprisingly, was completely destroyed in the crash.

The MiG-29 is the second example to crash in as many months, with another jet having been lost in June. As in this case, the pilot was able to eject and survive. A third MiG-29 was destroyed on the ground during a Russian drone attack against Voznesensk Air Base.
While Ukraine is aiming to move away from Russian-built equipment like the MiG-29, the Fulcrum’s extensive use among former Warsaw Pact NATO nations means that there is a relatively healthy stock of spares and expertise. Additional airframes are also potentially on the cards from Poland.
Adding to the losses, in late July an F-16 Fighting Falcon was lost during a training sortie. Again, the more valuable pilot was able to eject, but until more stable deliveries of fighter aircraft can be assured every airframe is precious. The news of the F-16 crash came only days after it was confirmed that a Ukrainian F-16 had, for the first time, shot down a Russian fighter – specifically an Su-35S Flanker-E.

Ukraine has lined up Gripens and Rafales to reinforce its air arm, though the timeframe beyond initial deliveries – particularly with regards to larger numbers of aircraft – is unclear at this stage.
Authorities are investigating the MiG-29 crash to determine the root cause. According to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) in their most recent statement, the search for the MiG-29’s flight data recorder unit is still underway. The investigation is referred to as a criminal investigation, though at this stage this does not mean any crime is known to have taken place.
