It looks like there might be another chapter in the saga of Maverick: “Top Gun 3” reportedly in the works at Paramount.
I’m not sure I’m happy with the news, but according to reports coming from Hollywood, Paramount would be already working on a third installment of the Top Gun movie franchise.
The second chapter, Top Gun: Maverick, which came in 2022, 36 years after the first one and follows Capt. Pete “Maveick” Mitchell as he returns to Top Gun school for yet another dangerous mission, set several records: at 1.49B USD, it is Tom Cruise’s highest grossing movie, is the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time in the U.S. and 12th-highest in the world. Moreover, it won one Academy Award in 2023 and was nominated for six Oscars including Best Picture. Not bad.
I personally don’t feel the need for yet another chapter, although, despite my general dislike for sequels, Top Gun 2 did not disappoint me at all. This what I wrote on the day I first watched TG:M in theater:
I liked the “rhythm” of the movie, the locations, the acting [Tom Cruise was great!], the characters, the soundtrack, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and the many references to the original movie: there are several new versions of some iconic scenes of Top Gun, most of those have already appeared in all the trailers. The good news is that they are not bad copies of the original ones, rather “classic” elements among those that have made Top Gun famous among fans and not. For this reason, it was a pleasure to see them in their more modern variant, as there are things that never get old, but have become part of the original movie’s heritage.
Therefore, who knows? Maybe they won’t ruin the magic of my cult movie this time either. In the end, according to Deadline, the project would gather some great actors from Top Gun: Maverick (Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Glen Powell) as well as producers Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison. Joe Kosinski, will reportedly either direct or produce while TG:M co-writer Ehren Kruger would bewriting a draft already.
So far, there’s been no confirmation by Paramount. However, provided Top Gun 3 is really in the works as reported, the movie might not come before a few years: Tom Cruise is working on the eight Mission: Impossible movie, due to hit the theaters in 2025, and Warner Bros. Discovery has recently announced that Cruise had signed a deal to star in and produce movies for Warners. In other words, Maverick will be busy for other projects for some time before he can strap in the cockpit of a U.S. Navy jet again.
Let’s wait and see.
