A French Mirage 2000D assigned to the Escadron de Chasse 2/3 “Champagne” crashed during a night training mission, with one fatality confirmed while the search is ongoing for the second crew member.

A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D has crashed during a night training mission at approximately 22:40 on Oct. 20, 2026. The aircraft, assigned to the Escadron de Chasse 2/3 “Champagne” at the Base Aérienne (Air Base) 133 in Nancy-Ochey, came down near Rogéville, in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle, approximately 25 km north of the air base.

The service confirmed in a statement that the body of one crew member was found and is pending identification. Meanwhile, the search is ongoing for the second crew member.

The Mirage 2000D, the Mirage variant specialized in the air-to-ground mission, has a crew of two, which includes a pilot and a navigator weapon systems officer (Navigateur Officier Systèmes d’Armes – NOSA). Colonel David Pappalardo, a spokesperson for the French Air and Space Force, told media that on board were a young pilot in training and an experienced NOSA “with many flight hours.”

The Colonel further confirmed that the aircraft was returning from a routine training mission, without weapons onboard, when the radio and radar contact with the base was lost. A search-and-rescue (SAR) effort was subsequently launched, while at the same time reports of a loud explosion near Rogéville started to emerge.

Difficult weather conditions are complicating the SAR effort. “We couldn’t request and obtain a helicopter overflight of the area: night, fog, extremely bad weather,” said Yves Séguy, prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle, during a press briefing. The prefect added that this force the search to be conducted with “persons on foot, accompanied by drones.”

Colonel Ludovic Humbert, commander of Base Aérienne 133, described the mishap as “tragic,” and said the aircraft was on final approach to the airbase in “less than optimal conditions.” Additionally, he said the aircraft was “recently renovated” and “very modern,” likely referring to the Mirage 2000D RMV (Rénovation Mi-Vie, Mid-Life Update).

This is a developing story, further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
