This page contains a collection of Italian F-104 patches: patches that were produced and used by stormi and gruppi (Wings and Squadrons) equipped with the Starfighter and patches of many non-flying units that have an F-104 on their badge. It also cointains some famous reproductions, patches that were designed in the F-104 era but were never worn by crews, flight hours, roundels and every kind of patch related to the Starfighter. Even if the majority of the patches displayed comes from my own collection, many others are pictures and scans provided by Italian and foreign collectors who have helped gathering material for this research. A special thanks goes to Giancarlo Gastaldi, Edward Duggan, Emiliano “Panik” Guerra, Antonio Di Franco, Urbano Floreani, Riccardo Vestuto, Antonio Arnese, Pasquale Romano, Renato Contin, Massimo Stagni, Massimo “Nuty01” Gualtieri, Osvaldo Mazza and Giorgio Catellani (and a few others I can’t remember now) who gave me patches, scans, images and a lot of information about the history of the patches displayed in this page. The page will be constantly updated as soon as I find more patches and receive pictures and scans from other collectors.

Update Jan. 25th 2008: in a topic published on the Italian Vipers forum, I was asked why in this page a few patches are defined “reproduction” or “fake” one. I explained it in Italian, so Italians can read my explaination here.
For the foreign visitors here’s my explaination:
There are a lot of reproductions and fakes you can find on the Internet (eBay just to name but a place where you can buy patches) or trading with other collectors, even if the evaluation is personal. Everything can be considered either origina or “repro” at the same time. It just depends on the parameters the collector uses to define it. There are collectors that consider original only those patches bought directly from Wing and Squadrons. But there are also other collectors that consider original also those patches that were not sold by flying unit but were bought by pilots elsewhere (in a militaria shop for example) and worn on the flight suit.
In my honest opinion, in both the above cases, the patch can be considered an original one but other collectors could consider original only patches complying with the first requirement (patch sold by the unit).
Dealing with the reproductions, those are usually examples post produced years after the original model was designed and used. If the patch is identical to the original but produced in a different period, I consider it a repro (there are many and very well done). If the patch is not only produced later but shows also some differences from the original, in my opinion it must be considered a fake.

  1. Very Great site thanks alot.Im from TURKEY and collect airforce patches and pilot wings If you want from TURKEY please write me

  2. Hello, great collection and excellent patches! I am collector of airforces patches from Serbia,if you need any from Serbia let me know. Regards

  3. I was woundering if there was a chance to get 2 or 3 patches. I flew CF104-2m’s and there are no where, to find. Just a Black on White with the F104 with it’s writing on it. I lost everything, my log books manuals, and dress uniforms, medals ribbions, and citations..to boot. It was in a fire, as a gerage with fully insulated and had the works for a shop, since my late brother-inlaw, was a dragster. the ceiling was closed exept for the I beam and poles against the walls for Block & tackle. I and everyone thought that the addict, was the safest place to put your most prized material inside. It had a door to climb up to the addict. However, a stupid, S.O.B. of a son was smoking pot, and his bud, lost it between the plywood and insulation. All they had to do, was lift up the 5/8th plywood, and toss the insulation out of the addict through the door. But no they ran, and about the time the 600lb air compressor blew, their was nothing left, of the addict, or any of my patches from based a Lahr, Germany, 1St. Wing from 78 to 80, pluss everywhere else you have meets etc. I lost everything, and now I’m fighting with who you believe the CND, for my medals, ribbions, accreditations, and a what I considered a prize, my 2 Black flightsuits. “Dark Blue” doesn’t cut it. also all my dress and formal dress as regular dress, so I lost allot, all in two Bags, and 2 boxes, of all my logs, etc. and all the 100’s of patches, hat pins, lapell pins, etc. So I was hoping you could send down a couple, I would pay for them, of course, I had to buy a new jacket..Go Figure the Canadian Airforce. It’s no wounder they can’t fly, pilots don’t like beening treated like lap dogs, with no brains. All those desk jocks with a few extra large bars have to say, is Oh I’m sorry, well get to it, as soon as possible. that was in 1996…So I’m still fighting but it’s tough because when I got back I was transfered to a CF5E MK.III, and then that was all gone too! The S.O.B. has a restaining order on him, to not bug his Mom who adopted a pure Native baby, and they gave him everything to waste it on booze and drugs. I guess good living doesn’t taste as well, for those who don’t care, and bust up the house etc. Now my son is 24, and I live 15 minutes away, he’ll never show up. I made sure at the hearing that, if he does, Gramma, will call, and he’ll be singing a different toon. As for the gerage. My late father inlaw, past away, a few years earlier, and he did the insurance, thing. but now their’s only a shell of what was one of the coolest gerage you could see. So I hope you can get me a few, and I can at least know where F104 pilots are. Call sign “Slice” +403-714-2221

  4. To whom is a fellow Zipper Pilot:

    Please read all “Important”

I need your help, if possible, I lost all of my cothing and Helment-Mask, all my Gear, 4-Flightsuits 2 unused.Plus all Medals with Ribbens & Accreditations, for I did. I have duel Citenship, and while in the US I uped to the Airforce; where it begins, but ends in CAF.This what happened and I took along time to think about if you would help me ouy. I was station in Germany 2 times. 1 US 2 CAF, flying the same aircraft; the f104G US and the CF104-2m with the QG-7s seat init, after spending all my time in a C2 it was a pleasen’t surprise. This what happen since I had to discharge, because I was hit by a bus, and my right eye lens straiten so my eyesight, now I couldn’t fly. I flew the CF5E tiger II Freedom fighter, and after I left the US, and rejioned with the CAF I found the Zipper I flew for the US wasn’t what I was flying in Canada, it was sweet. It blew away the US model, and that to find, the CF5EMK.II was also lic to built through Canadair and Orenda for the engines, which
gave the CF5E Tiger II I don’t call it a freedom fighter, and when ever I had a choice I would have them take my peanut tip tanks off. So the Canadian versions and their approch to there doctrum in helping, out, giveing a hand when needed to the pepole that we are in their Country. Was a far cry from the US, which tried to make germany a US town of it’s own. Which I drew ever closer to wanting to leave, and after the tour was up, I did. I was station everywhere, but first, it’s to Sheepard Airforce Base to the 90th. Flight training scholl and T38s. after I was then given a F104G, with still a C2 ejection seat, I never ejected so I don’t know how it would of fared. Now why am I send you this, My ex mother inlaw’s gerage which was fully insulkated & heated, for my late father inlaw, we built the gerage, to race, and for my late bro. inlaw for a place to put a very nice gerage, to built his dragsters, with two 8″ round 1/4” tubes, a I beam across the 26′ beam to the other pole,
cemented and bolted to the pad. to do engines etc. also their was an addict, which was insulated and 3/4″ plywood was on the upside with drywall on the down side, with the lights between. I and all the family stored are most important things, in the addict, all of my Patches, lapel pins hat pins, Medals, Ribbons & Accreditations etc. were up their, and more, all my gear from the US & Canada forces, even my Helment, was the same and mask, I only have to get the regulator change once to the Canadian system. Plus my Jacket with my Patches, and my semi, full, and formal dress with 3 pairs of shoes and 3 pairs of flight boots. you can imagone all you went through to be a Pilot, then Senior Pilot, with over 1000 hours in a Zipper, most in the CF104-2m, and the US’s F104G even tough they didn’t fly them very much I thought, but they did as did the F5E Tiger II. all the US Plains I flew only two stick out, at Nellis A/F Base their where 2 F20’s Tigersharks, and a person from
Northop ask if I would take it up, and send a report, to him… I said that would have to cleared. I got 3.5 hours in it, it was a fsingle engine F5 but with advanced avionics to the MK.II but it was closer to the F5 MK.IV just bigger LED screens but the engine was a surprise, and it was also to be on F16’s. It was a Battle of Northop, General Electric, BAe Electra F.6 Lighting II for order’s for a cheep muti-roll fighter or Interceptor.
You all know who won, I said if they would of moved the wings above, and had the intake below as well give it the A6M1 Vulcan, instead of the same single 50’s with only 450 rds. they could of put in a larger radar, and hold as much ordan. as the F16 and still be under, but they would of had to put in the correct instrument. well as to me, I served in STRKFITRON-37 The Bull, STRKFITRON-113 the Stingers. Also in Baden, and Maraville France with the CAF, with a Zipper with a QG-S7 Ejec. seat. Also for the 434 Blue Nose Maritime Strike and Intercept with the F104-2m. iIn the US it was the norm, here then there, then back , then some where else. But I was in the 7th Fighter Sqd. 49th Wing Holloman A/F New Mexico. then23rd fighter Wing, pluss the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing in a F5E Tiger II. Also the Fighting 143 Fighting Wing. After that I was in Langley Virgenia Airforce Base. I trained their for enough that I got about 43.4 hr’s in a F15A But 100’s of hours in a F15B plsu the 100s in
a Simuator. After that, it was bye, bye. 1 year later I was flying the CF104 then the CF5 Mk.II which both were built by Canadair and engines from Orenda, giveing the CF104-2m which could scan down and ahead, topped ouy at Mach 2.35 & the CFe Mk.II at Mach 1.6+ That and all I can say, it was a same that, europe had to buy from the US. But Canada did contrabute, with the NASARR-F-15A Radar, The Help with the NASARR-F27A in the F104S, Plus it used both the NASARR-R-24A, & -F-15A.
So why did I email you, it’s because frankly I’m getting nowhere with the US & Canada, over the Burnt items, and all the memobillia you collect, and share, from Lapel Pins sometimes gold, and Hat Pins, to 100s & 100s of Patches.
The only thing I received was my Gold ring from the USAF, from 1000 in a Zipper to just over 775 hr’s in the F5 & CF5E MK.II, plus the hr’s in the F15A. What I’m whishing since this is been going on for almost 15 years. But their stone walling, and that I went from one to another I think didn’t help. But my family is here and my son is to! SO what do you do. I’ve tried very hard just to get a used pair of are older Dark Blue flight suit, which was Black to me. And all the other thing including my Jacket with my name wings, and rank of Captain, plus the patches. I even took the 10 jumps to get my parachute badge, for it as well. I was hoping you be king enough to send a few patches of those I saw, ago and again now. I’m just trying to piece together, a bit of my life, as a pilot. I don’t even have my wings or anything, and yes they really don’t care howmuch or long it takes. it was 15 years to get my solid white Gold Ring. And after time it’s 10.5 and now I’m at 10. SO I’m going
to see a jewer to have it resized. He’s been my Jeweler from along time. SO A AM Asking as a fellow Pilot, and one who Certainly flew the F104S, I wish I could of gotten a Chance at it. But I can still go back, with 2 cuts here, & 1 cut their my eyesight will be the same before I was hit by a bus, which made my eye lens straiten , so I couldn’t fly, and after 3 months at a desk; I was gone.
