A Ukrainian H-225 Super Puma helicopter has crashed at 08:20AM LT on Jan. 18, 2023, in Brovary, an eastern suburb of the capital Kyiv, Ukraine. The building of the National Emergency Service was damaged with subsequent fire, glazing in a fourteen-story residential building and three cars. At 09:06AM, the fire in the building was contained to an area of 500 square meters, and at 09:28AM it was extinguished.

There were 9 people on board: 6 members of the operational team of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, including the Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky, his first deputy minister and state secretary, as well as 3 members of the crew of the State Emergency Service. On the ground, nine people died, including three children. 30 people were injured (including 12 children), who were hospitalized

The reason of the incident is being investigated. First reports say the weather was foggy at the time of the crash but all the possibilities are being considered.

According to the Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, the helicopter involved in the incident is the Super Puma with bort number “54”, an airframe that was “repeatedly involved in the performance of tasks for the transportation of personnel to the places of emergency situations. Among the aircraft of the Ministry of Internal Affairs system, this one was most often used due to the possibility of transporting a sufficient number of people at the same time. The ship’s crew was prepared to perform tasks under difficult conditions, had the required number of hours of flight precisely on these EC-225 helicopters.

The first two H225 Super Puma helicopters arrived in Ukraine on December 20, 2018, after being overhauled and upgraded in Romania. It’s not clear how many aircraft have been delivered so far, but it’s known that 10 were in Ukrainian service by December 2021: four with the National Guard and another six for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
